202 - Architectural Roundtable: FACT or FICTION? Achieving a Net Zero Footprint in Design, Architecture and Construction
In our contemporary world debate rages on the nature, severity and implications of climate change + global warming. Undeniably central to the equation is the role of buildings and construction regarding environmental impact, energy consumption and resource depletion. While buildings prove a major factor in the ecological footprinting of cities, they also offer a remarkable opportunity to turn the tide. Architects and builders are actively pursuing goals of net zero impact and carbon neutrality in design and construction. Significant strides are being realized and impressive innovation being exercised in the quest for built environments that do no harm, or that give back even more than they take. The Architectural Roundtable team considers the situation at hand, points to obstacles and opportunities on the path, and underscores initiatives underway that reach towards Net Zero. - Further your understanding of the definition of Modular Interior Construction and why it is a method embraced in Europe
- Identify the reasons why conventionally built interiors shorten the life cycle of buildings
- Observe the design benefits that come from the schedule acceleration of modular interior construction during initial construction and the control you hold in future renovations
- Explore the environmental sustainability of reducing material waste, greenhouse gasses, energy and real estate footprint during the initial construction of modular interiors
- Recognize the importance of downstream environmental sustainability through the ongoing reuse of architectural and technology elements and how this is more powerful than simply recycling or using recycled materials alone
- Leave with a deeper knowledge of the importance of a holistic approach to environmental sustainability of modular, agile interiors
- Identify the financial (and potential tax) benefits of modular interior construction
Presenter: Kristin Moore, Environmental Lead, DIRTT Environmental Solutions
Biography: For over ten years Kristin Moore has been involved in Modular Architectural Interiors. She is one of the founding leaders of DIRTT Environmental Solutions, helping to develop the company’s environmental operations and philosophy. Previous to DIRTT, she led dealer and training departments at SMED International/Haworth Inc. Kristin is a working advocate of sustainable initiatives as it relates to building green interiors. She is Environmental Lead at DIRTT, involved in helping navigate clients, architects, and designers toward environmentally sustainable solutions, without compromising the design aesthetic or the client’s bottom-line. To demonstrate an apples-to-apples comparison of conventional interior construction to modular interior construction, Kristin uses a data tool that not only takes into account the financial cost of each approach, but also the environmental cost. The numbers aren’t based on some generic imaginary space. She uses the client’s precise space in their precise location. The data tool, called ICEberg®, is a finalist in the 2007 CoreNet Global Innovation Award. Kristin is a LEED® Accredited Professional (since 2004), and has been involved in several LEED projects across Canada and the United States including the new Exelon Tower in Chicago (LEED Platinum) and Johnson County in Olathe, Kansas (LEED Gold).

208 - Innovations in Lighting Technologies: Incorporating New Lamp and Ballast Technologies into the Fixture. How Does it Look and Perform Together?
There have been many advances in light source technologies in the last few years but without a delivery system; the luminaire (or fixture as it is most often called); these new technologies cannot be used. These luminaires need to perform properly, which means getting light where it is needed, and look good by either blending into the architecture or acting as an architectural element. Then there is the whole issue of control: switching and dimming with these technologies. This session will examine the important aspects of luminaires and controls that must be considered when using these new light sources and technologies.
